A Battery for Chilled Water Systems - Helping to Address Grid Changes

Abstract

As more renewable forms of energy are integrated onto the electric grid both the utilities and the end users are significantly impacted.  The utilities have seen dramatic changes to the required demand over the course of a day and end users are seeing structural changes in commercial electric rates.  Various types of energy storage help to address these changes and aid in the continued growth and integration of renewable energy resources.

This presentation will focus on thermal storage for chilled water plants - behind the meter applications for buildings using chillers for cooling.  Thermal storage acts as a thermal battery for these plants by storing Btu’s for cooling in the form of ice or water.  We will review the evolving grid changes, corresponding changes to the commercial electric rates and applications for thermal storage.
