A Case Study of Non-Road Transportation Electrification

Abstract

This presentation discusses a case study of the TVA Non-Road Transportation Electrification Project designed and implemented by Lockheed Martin Energy. This program developed a methodology to pay incentives on local emissions reduction ($/ton of CO2e) in order to support adoption of electrified, non-road transportation assets.

Technologies: electric forklifts, airport ground support equipment, heavy-duty truck stop electrification, and electric truck refrigeration units. In addition to reduced emissions, benefits included increased revenue for electric utilities, environmental benefits, and improved C&I customer operations. Results: Over 650 fossil-fueled nonroad vehicles were converted to electric powered alternatives and 24 electrification stations at truck stops were installed. Net emissions of 209,337 tons of CO2 will be reduced over the lifetime of the new equipment. Local power companies realized net load growth of over 9.4 million kWh and $755,000 annually from the nonroad vehicle conversions to electricity power. The revenue from beneficial electrification will surpass the cost of the incentives in less than five years while providing economic and environmental benefits to utility customers.

Cortney McKibben, Senior Program Manager, TVA is a Sr. Program Manager within TVA’s EnergyRight® Solutions for Business + Industry. During his time within the organization, Cortney aided in the ideation and successful launch of the electrification programs for the business and industry sector. Prior to this assignment, Cortney served as a Power Utilization Engineer within TVA’s Customer Delivery team where he performed detailed energy audits and power quality assessments for local power companies (LPCs) end-use customers. Cortney is an electrical engineering graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and earned a master’s degree in business administration from The University of Memphis. He is a licensed electrical engineer in Tennessee and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Before joining TVA, Cortney worked as an application engineer in the private sector where he managed the installation of energy management systems and the corresponding hardware. Cortney has over 10 years of experience in the engineering and energy efficiency fields. In his spare time, Cortney likes to consider himself a Dance Dad.

Ian Metzger

Ian Metzger has eleven years of experience working in energy efficiency and renewable energy. His primary areas of expertise include demand side management program design, energy efficiency and renewable energy assessments, emerging technology measurement and verification, and energy analysis software development. He is involved with national and regional emerging technology research efforts related to energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and renewable energy systems. He is well recognized in his field and his professional achievements comprise 27 publications, 15 software copyrights, one patent, and national awards including the recent 2019 AESP Energy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Emerging Tools & Technologies. He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering and B.A. in liberal arts from University of San Diego and an M.S. in building energy systems engineering from University of Colorado, Boulder. His professional certifications include Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional.
