Cost Effective ZNE - Scalable Solutions for Small Commercial Buildings

Abstract

California’s aggressive energy reduction goals include having 50% of existing commercial buildings retrofit to ZNE by 2030.  In this California Energy Commission EPIC project, replicable ZNE retrofit packages for small commercial buildings were developed with costs within 10% of conventional construction.  Some of the unique challenges for deploying ZNE in small commercial buildings are explored, with proposed solutions that offer relevance to large commercial buildings as well.

Cindy Regnier, P.E., is the Technical Leader for Commercial Building Systems at LBNL and Executive Manager for FLEXLAB[please insert registered trademark symbol here], DOE's building technologies testbed dedicated to integrated and low energy building and grid systems integration research and development.  Cindy also manages several research projects on integrated systems, ZNE and low energy whole building solutions.  Prior to joining LBNL in 2009 she designed low energy projects, including net zero carbon and LEED Platinum facilities.

John leads the building performance team for Integral Group’s Oakland, CA office. He and his team provide low energy system and thermal comfort design strategies for buildings by leveraging world class simulation tools and years of experience in building science and HVAC.  With over 15 years of industry experience, John has a diverse skill set and strong background in building energy audits, energy analysis, HVAC system energy optimization, retro-commissioning and measurement and verification.
